What is a New Years Resolution?

New Years Resolutions are a tradition going back many many years. A New Year’s Resolution at its; core is a commitment to change something for the better in the new year to come. We all have something we want to make better in our lives. Whether it be to go for that promotion at work. Or, to quit smoking. So as tradition compels us we commit to change these things in the new year.

It gives us a chance to look at ourselves and see what we need to change to make the new year better. The question is how do we go from knowing we need to change something to actually making it happen. This is where a lot of times we fall short. I myself have been guilty of making resolutions that I never follow through on. I just go through the motions on new years of making the resolutions. Then I expected somehow they would magically happen. Or I would forget about them entirely.

You can make Resolutions all day long but if you don’t give them wheels they won’t go anywhere.

Think of it this way. If you build the most beautiful car ever. I am talking super sleek with all the bells and whistles. But you didn’t put a set of wheels on it and get behind the wheel then that car is not going to go anywhere. A new year’s resolution is the same thing. You can have the best resolution ever. You can make a resolution to get a promotion in 2020. However, if you don’t go to work and excel at your job and really make an effort to be deserving of that promotion, then you probably won’t get it.

This concept works for any resolution you make. If you want to lose weight but don’t change your eating or exercise routine you probably won’t lose weight. If you want to start your own business but don’t start working on a business plan you get the idea. So in 2020 when making your new year’s resolution I want you to come up with a plan to achieve it. Our mothers always told us we could do anything we set our minds to. That is the truth. We just have to follow through and anything is possible.

Focus is the Key to All Things

I know many people who make lots of resolutions. Most are unrelated. It is okay to have many goals but remember you have to work on them one at a time. I think of it this way. If you have one rope but you have 5 people trapped on a ledge you don’t split the rope into 5 as you will never have enough to reach any of them. Instead, you pull one up at a time. It takes more time but you will eventually save them all. The same is true with setting goals. If you split your focus you will never reach any of them but if you prioritize and focus on one at a time you will achieve them all.

Focusing on one at a time means you can put your whole mind to the task of achieving that one single goal and you will find it is easier to accomplish than trying to achieve everything at once. Life is a process. When you were a baby you did not try to learn how to crawl, walk, and talk all at the same time. Instinctively your brain focused on one thing at a time.

Make sure your goals are yours and not someone else’s

Never let someone else make your resolution for you. Not a friend, or even your spouse. Those resolutions are doomed to fail. Why? Because you are not committed to them. Your friend can tell you that you need to lose weight. They mean well I’m sure but if you are not ready to make that commitment yourself it will never happen. So instead really look inside yourself and find out what it is you want to achieve. Then you will have the commitment to see it through.

Last year I tried to set a new year’s resolution that was not my own. My friend told me that I should find another job. He said that I could do better than the job I had. I almost did it until I realized that sure I could find a better paying job. However, I would not be as happy as I was working for the company I work for currently. So I changed my goal and resolved to be the best employee possible. Now at the end of 2019 and into the beginning of 2020, I hold the highest position in the company besides the owners. I am still not making a whole bunch of money but I am happy because I am doing what I love.

Follow through and don’t get discouraged

This is probably the hardest thing to do when working towards achieving your resolution. There are going to be obstacles. If it was easy then you wouldn’t need to make resolutions in the first place because you would have already done it. We make new year’s resolutions because we want to achieve something that is difficult. So expect obstacles. But don’t let them stop you. Don’t be a fly on the wall be a bulldozer and knock it down.

There is a solution to every problem. There is a way around or through any obstacle. You just need to be committed to finding it. Always keep your goal in mind and be committed to achieving it. Then when an obstacle comes along tell yourself what your goal is and why you need to achieve it and then find a way through. My boss is fond of telling me that we can’t go back and we can’t stand still. The ONLY way to go is forward.

Remember you can achieve anything that you commit to. Don’t listen to people who tell you that you can’t do it. There are always going to be people in our lives who tell us that we can’t do something. They may even be the people closest to us. It isn’t that they don’t love us or believe in us. It is that they don’t believe that it is possible to do anything with the right motivation. So instead of letting them discourage us, we need to prove them wrong and then we can help them see that they too can achieve their goals.
